Agenda
Introductions and setting the agenda
NREN Operational updates
- SUNET - FP
- SUNET is implementing a new syncronization and storage service with the help of the supplier Box.
- There is also work being done on a Media distribution service (MDS), i.e. "University youtube".
- To be able to develop and integrate new services into operation SUNET is working on a new project model.
- NORDUnet - FP
- One major incident since last meeting which impacted FUNET, there was a total outage to Finland due to a mistake by supplier. NORDUnet have been working with the supplier to ensure that such a mistake should not happen again.
- Funet will soon start using adobe connect in production.
- UNINETT - VV
- UNINETT is currently looking at the technology used to build a storage and syncronization service, they might base it on webdav
- SIP infrastructure is growing, 36 institutions using it now
- Several organisations are looking at using NAV, e.g. both RHnet and FSKnet
- Continued delivery of 10G to customers
- 100G tests bewteen Trondheim and Oslo
- Looking at how to build cloud services, maybe by using moose filesystem
- Looking at new architectures, what is a service and what kind of roles are involved. Need to differientiate between customer and system services
- UNINETT noc, new IT operations plan (how should the new UNINETT NOC look like), ten commandments of the NOC. VV will share them when they are finalized
- FSKnet - JF
- Much time spent on new fiberlinks
- FSKnet is trying to setup filesender
- Developing and extending the DIX to new location
- RHnet - MO
- Have establish a precence in nordic HPC facility, hosted by a commercial company
- RIX upgraded to 10G (possibility to upgrade NORDUnet port to 10G if wanted)
- Preparing for Terena 2012
NREN development update
- NORDUnet
- Looking at the continuity planning for services
- Continued development for NI, will also be used to generate documentation about automatically discovered hosts and services.
- CF-Engine has almost be completely integrated in the server configuration environment. UNINETT is using version 2 but going to migrate to puppet (puppetlabs) instead.
- Currently working on implementing NCS (by Tail-F) in production. The goal is to automate parts of the provisioning of services in the network. Together with the development of the openNSA (based on the NSI protocol) NCS and openNSA will allow for more automatic provisioning of multidomain services in the network.
TF-NOC update - SL
- TF-NOC survey result was presented at the last TF-NOC meeting
- Many organisations use Nagios and Cacti. Due to this fact it was decided to hold a Nagio, Cacti and Icinga workshop together with the next TF-NOC meeting.
- Best practices discussions at the next meeting
SL - IP-Best Common Operational Practices have done some work on IPv6 best practices
JF - There is also some work in IETF on IPv6 best practices (version 3 is in IETF draft)

NORDUnet updates
- Frank gave a presentation about the NORDUnet network expansion.
- The expansions discussed during the last meeting are now in place and we are now able to peer with several new large organisations.
- Johan gave a presentation about the MDS service development.
- The service has already been used for the NORDUnet and SUNET conferences and will also be used for the Terena conference.
Time to discuss other service operation
- Log analysis
Vegard asked what the other organisations do in this regard
NORDUnet use syslogging and Splunk
FSKnet also use syslogs. Only store no alerting
UNINETT and RHnet also use general syslogging.
UNINETT have been looking at Splunk and after some discussions it was decided that Stefan will check with Jörgen about the possibility of creating a cooperation between the Nordic countries hosting a Splunk instance.
AOB and next meeting
- Wednesday 12/9 between 10:00-16:00 over VC
